Lock Sixteen is located in Ottoville, a small town on the Miami-Erie Canal in Northwest Ohio. It is owned by Gene and Sheila Miller, also owners of The Lock Sixteen Steakhouse located in Lima, Ohio.
The name "Lock Sixteen" has always sparked a lot of attention. Ironically, the origin of Lock Sixteen is a misnomer. The name is derived from the canal lock at Ottoville, which was actually Lock 28 on the Old Miami-Erie Canal. When the contracts were left in the 1840's for the construction of the Miami-Erie Extension Canal from Loramie Summit to Junction, the right of way was contracted in mile sections. The town of Delphos was known by the early Germans as Section 10 and Ottoville was called "Sixteen." Both Delphos and Ottoville were founded by the priest John Otto Bredeick. "Otto's Village" was later incorporated, named in honor of it's founder, and is today referred to as Ottoville. Time has eroded the section named "Sixteen," and in the current years, "Sixteen" is now referred to as Lock Sixteen Catering & Steakhouse.
The first Lock Sixteen Restaurant was opened in Ottoville in 1979, after the refurbishment of the Old North Side Inn. With Gene's skills in meat cutting, the restaurant quickly developed a reputation for it's fine steaks and continues to benefit from his experience, as all steaks are still fresh cut daily by Gene.
In 1990, a new 10,000 square foot facility known as Lock Sixteen Catering was built to house the kitchen, warehouse, and corporate offices. The year 1991 brought another growth spurt when, with the help of Gordon Food Service's resources, Lock Sixteen was awarded the Elderly Nutrition Service contract, which serves meals to several hundred elderly customers in a seven-county area each week. This program has continued to grow, and at the present offers four different types of government funded & privately paid meal programs. Each year the number of clients we serve multiplies. We are proud to serve thousands of well-balanced and great tasting meals each week!
The Catering business continues to grow and is presently serving thousands each year. In 1995, a 65-foot semi tractor-trailer mobile kitchen was added to the fleet. Lock Sixteen was the primary food provider for Country Concert located in Ft. Loramie, Ohio for 10 years and is currently the exclusive caterer for Summit Racing in Norwalk, Ohio, Over the years Lock Sixteen has had the opportunity to serve many interesting people including past Ohio State Coach John Cooper, the Beach Boys, REO Speedwagon, ZZ Topp, Carrie Underwood, and Neal McCoy.
Today, Lock Sixteen continues to grow and is well-known around Northwest Ohio and the surrounding areas for it's fine menu and friendly service. Gene Miller's recipe for success comes from giving his customers "true value." And it's that recipe that is making Lock Sixteen Catering and Steakhouse the success they are today.
UNOH EVENT CENTER
Lock Sixteen is the exclusive caterer for the UNOH Event Center. The 25,000 square foot all-purpose facility opened in the Fall of 2008, and has so much to offer to the Lima community. Guests will enjoy a contemporary atmosphere coupled with exquisite dining and professional service at the UNOH Event Center.
